-PRESENT DAY-
Thankfully, Kaye had enough composure to stand in the cockpit door, smiling and nodding at the passengers as they deplaned in Fort Lauderdale. It was only Paul’s second return trip through the turbulence, and even with Dallas there on the intercom once he’d hurtled through it reassuring him everything was “just fine,” he still felt like he might hurl from anxiety at even the slightest provocation. And even if he did end up spewing on the passengers, maybe they wouldn’t have noticed. Just like Kaye’s requests for flight data that didn’t register with AVA.
“All right,” Kaye said over her shoulder. “That’s the last of them.”
For now. Paul took a few bracing breaths, squared his shoulders, and went into the cabin to see if Dallas knew anything about the “black box.” Dallas’ face lit up when he saw Paul…but then he dropped his gaze and began picking up the things the passengers had left behind on purpose: napkins and empty cups, folded and re-folded newspapers, mangled magazines and half-eaten bags of pretzels.
“I’ll see you this afternoon?” Kaye said.
Paul turned back toward her. “That’s what the schedule says.”
“And I’m asking you.” She scrutinized him for a long moment, then said, “You’re sure?”
“I’m sure.”
She nodded once, then pulled her rollerbag onto the skybridge and strode away. And then it was just Paul and Dallas on the tiny, cramped commuter jet…and Paul realized the black box was the last thing on his mind. The words came rushing out before he could stop them. “I did something in Bermuda.” He watched Dallas holding his face still. “I did, didn’t I?” He sagged against 1A, draped sideways against the seat back. “How bad was it?”
Dallas smiled faintly to himself. “You had several interesting recommendations on how we could be spending our time.”
Paul took off his glasses, mashed his face into the top of the headrest and groaned. “I’m so sorry.”
“Nothing to be ashamed of.” Dallas gave the overhead bins one final check, then hauled his bag of airline trash to the front of the aisle and looked Paul up and down. “Nothing at all.”
All around them, the airport was giving off typical airport sounds and smells—warning beeps, engines and machinery clangs, jet fuel and hot rubber. But with the two of them alone together at the door of cockpit, Paul felt as if he could shift his focus and pretend they were entirely alone. Him and Dallas. He cleared his throat awkwardly. “So long as I didn’t say anything…weird.”
“Well, you didn’t want to take no for an answer.”
“I’m so sor—”
“Shh.” Dallas stroked Paul’s forearm. “You were just persistent. That’s all.” He leaned in close, and said, “You talked me into kissing you. But that’s as far as it went. I’m not gonna let anything happen when you won’t remember. I can even use the same tired excuses every damn night…and you won’t be any the wiser.”
“Okay,” Paul said in a husky voice. Did his mouth feel different, having kissed Dallas in his absence? He ran his tongue over his lower lip.
